This summer I will do a series of experiential events as in introduction to the Vitalism program, a one year course in Vitalistic healing which combines Vedic astrology, Paracelcian plant alchemy, and Buddhist meditation and spiritual practices.
The Astrology of Healing explores traditional correspondences of the planets as they relate to Vedic remedies including Goddesses and other deities, medicinal herbs, meditations, food, mantras, gemstones, and karma yoga. The class will be experiential with mantras, visualizations, and herbal elixirs. Learn how to heal through astrology! These events will take place at the Silk Road Chai Shop in Mount Shasta, CA at 7 PM, and the recordings will be posted on my YouTube channel in case you can't make it to Mount Shasta. The dates and topics are as follows: Saturday June 15 Astrology of Healing -- the Sun Saturday July 13 Astrology of Healing -- the Moon Saturday August 10 -- Astrology of Healing -- Jupiter

Introduction The following case studies are difficult cases from my homeopathic practice. These people have been almost completely debilitated by their auto immune diseases and some of them have been close to death In this paper I am sharing the stories of these people, and the principles I have learned through my Vedic astrology teachers. Please note that any errors or omissions are certainly mine, and the wisdom comes from him. The science of Vedic astrology can be helpful to medical and healing arts practitioners. It can reveal aspects of difficult cases that cannot be seen otherwise. It can help suggest remedial measures from Jyotish tradition such as gemstones and mantras. Astrology can bring to light information that will help with Ayurvedic, homeopathic, and other prescriptions. Prognosis can be clarified, including determining times of smooth sailing and more challenging times in the progression of chronic disease. Jyotish is the Science of Light. As a limb of the Vedas, it is considered the eye. Jyotish as the eye of the Vedas offers deep insight into the karmas that bring us into this life, as well as profound guidance for our continued spiritual and personal development. From a healer’s perspective, Jyotish is ultimately a science of the heart, for we must be motivated by compassion to be able to take all the technical complexities of Jyotish and put them together into an integrated totality that will help others. Jupiter is the planet of Akash tattwa—the ether element, which brings everything in the universe together in divine unity. Jupiter is exalted in the sign of Cancer, which rules the heart. Perceiving with the heart brings integration of all the myriad techniques and details we consider in our study of Jyotish. With Jupiter’s blessing, we see with the eyes of our heart. When we work from this oneness of the heart, the light of Jyotish shines bright. Staying with the heart also prevents burnout, which is something that both astrologers and medical practitioners can suffer from. I hope that as we deepen our studies of this sacred science, we will always approach our work from the heart, and trust our hearts to help others. Methodology I am working with these clients based on my experience as a healing arts practitioner, as that is where my interest in Jyotish stems from. To me, Jyotish is an exciting extension of my healing arts practice. A therapeutic relationship with the client which develops over time is crucial. Healing arts professionals gather all pertinent information before the consultation in order to provide the deepest and most effective level of help to the client. With the practice of Jyotish as a healing modality, it is important to be able to go to a deep level with the client by having as much information and study time as possible before advice and prescriptions are given. The deep insights that come from such a reading will impress the client as much as a “blind” reading would. In complicated health issues we can be most helpful and accurate if we have start with good information. Following this article is a copy of the intake form that the clients fill out before the first appointment. I meet with the client for a minimum of two initial appointments. The first appointment is to gather information and establish rapport, and get a sense of the person. I’ll take a peek at their chart by this time, but this first appointment is not for the actual reading. I find out whether they will they be open to chanting mantras, or if can they afford expensive gemstones. It’s good to get a sense of all this before making recommendations and starting a deep reading. A week later I meet with person again to go over the chart, including karmic factors related to the disease, prognosis through dasas and transits and remedies. One important factor is helping the client understand their soul’s journey through the placement of the atmakaraka in rasi, navamsha, and other charts. People with chronic illness are often experience much bodily pain, social, physical, and emotional restrictions, and deep losses. Having a chronic illness is a lonely path; few family and friends can understand what its like to have such a limited lifestyle. In these cases of “bondage” by illness, spiritual development may be the only relief, and the Jyotishi can be the guide. They are more likely to do the remedies if there is rapport built first, especially for clients who are not familiar with Hindu culture, mantras, and gemstone therapy. One of the most healing benefits of a reading such as this is putting people in touch with their karma. As Jyotishis we may take this for granted, but much suffering is eliminated when a sense of surrender is experienced. As one of my clients said a month or so after having her reading and chanting the Maha Mritunjaya mantra: “A lot of things are falling away. Why do I question the path? It’s all marked out. I just learn more and more about it and go through it as deep as I can. It’s almost like taking a big deep breath and letting go.” Follow ups appointments are done bimonthly for a minimum of 6 months. It is useful to go over changes physical symptoms, psycho emotional state, compliance with remedial measures, and results. Auto Immune Disorders: Definition The immune system is designed to protect the body from bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that can cause harm in the form of infectious disease. A normal immune system is able to differentiate between harmful invaders and healthy tissue. An auto immune disease is caused when the body’s immune system loses this ability to differentiate between “self” and “non- self” and begins to attack its own tissues, causing inflammation at the site. The type of tissue that is attacked determines the type of disease. Auto immune conditions can be diagnosed by blood tests which determine the presence of auto antibodies. Allergies and hypersensitivity reactions are similar to auto immune diseases. In allergies, the body attacks substances that are not harmful and it would usually ignore, leading to inflammation. Asthma and food allergies fall into this category. Auto immune diseases affect women of childbearing/working age more than any other group. Triggers for auto immune disease include viral infections, sunlight (in the case of lupus), chronic stress, aging, hormones, and pregnancy. There may be a genetic component as well, as auto immune problems can run in families. The course of these diseases is unpredictable, as conventional medicine has no way to determine when flare ups or remissions may occur. This is where Jyotish may be able to be extremely helpful. They are generally chronic conditions that require monitoring over a lifetime even when symptoms are not present. Many people with auto immune diseases need to take strong medications that suppress the immune system to stop the auto immune attacks. These drugs include Prednisone and chemotherapy drugs such as Methotrexate. Unfortunately suppressing the immune system with these drugs also causes an inability to fight infection. These drugs also cause many other side effects which can be serious. How to look at the Rasi chart for health matters. Here is a list to follow of key factors to consider when inspecting a chart for health issues. Rasi chart: 1.Ascendant -- for an overall picture of health. 2.Quadrants -- for what kind of support there is for health. 3.Lagna lord – to understand more about the ascendant. 4.Atma karaka – to see how the soul is supported or suffering in the body. 5.Sun – for powers of recuperation, vitality. 6.Moon – and houses from the moon to note healing abilities, sleep, mind, and emotions. 7.Karakas, signs, and houses representing known health issues. 8.6th house and 6th lord for diseases caused shad ripu, which include bad habits, as well as “enemies” which can be infectious agents like viruses and bacteria. And for short term illness. 9.8th house and 8th lord for chronic diseases brought on by karma and genetics, more deep seated than 6th house disorders. 10.Badhak house, the planets therein, and lord of badhak (badhakesh) 11.Planets in marana karaka sthana. Jyotish Principles used in Analyses of auto immune charts
Mars rules nerves, and Mercury its enemy damages nerves.
Prashna for Health: treat the Navamsha of the Prashna like a natal chart. Saturn is the karaka for illness, if it aspects the prashna lagna , the health will improve. The lagna lord in the prashna will indicate the problems. See the planets conjoining the lagna lord. Yogas: Sarpa yoga occurs when malefics are in three or more of the quadrants of a chart. It is like being bound in the coils of a snake, it makes the person very driven and intense and is bad for health. Sanjay counts the sun as a malefic for this purpose, even though the sun is a natural indicator of health. The sun can make a sarpa yoga. If there is a benefic in quadrants along with the sarpa yoga, it is very important to strengthen the benefic to break the yoga, even if the benefic is not friendly to the lagna lord. Rudra yoga occurs when Venus or Mars aspect the same sign as moon. This yoga is based on concept of the second house. Something has to end for something else to start. The second house is second from the first, while the 8th house is second from seventh. The concept of Rudra is the starting of something which is going to cause the ending of something else. See the 2nd lord and the 8th lord and determine which is stronger. The stronger is called Prani, the one who controls your prana. This planet is Prani rudra. If he is favorable, you can live. In the natural zodiac, Venus is lord of the second and Mars is lord of the eigth. The are the natural rudras. The natural significator for health is Moon. It is the mind and the blood. Whenever it is aspecting a sign with Venus or Mars it is a natural Rudra yoga. Rudra yoga can give wealth, but also death. Pischa yoga is connected to the dead. It occurs when ketu is in lagna aspected by Mars in a quadrant. It is caused by the nodes because they don’t have bodies, like the dead. Two kinds of beings without bodies are bad. Rahu and Ketu are higher octaves of Saturn and Mars . A specific dictum says “Kuja vard Ketu” – Mars is like Ketu., but Ketu is far hotter than Mars. If Mars is red, then Ketu is infra red. Rahu is the higher octave of Saturn. If Saturn is bad, then Rahu is diabolical. Rahu doesn’t have a body, If such a being without a body would find a body through whom he can work, it is very bad. Rahu and Saturn together cause disease, sorrow, and endless suffering. However when Saturn is involved instead of Mars, it is not a Pisacha yoga because it involves our own forebears who have died rather than random ghosts. If Saturn is with Rahu or Mars is with Ketu, they start resonating with eachother. So with Mars and ketu, a fight (Mars) begins. It reaches a stage of complete headlessness. It causes tremendous suffering. Mars indicates someone who is angry. The quadrants in the horoscope indicate what can physically touch you. There is sudden violent, volatile destruction when Mars and ketu combine in this way. This is Pisacha yoga. Vipareet raj yoga occurs when a dustana lord in a dustana house. It means someone loses something for you to gain something. Who is losing what? You can lose your health for material gains. This is worst when Atma karaka is involved. Important Dasas for Health Matters: Paryaya dasas Paryaya dasas are the best for timing diseases. Chara paryaya dasa is mentioned in Parasara’s work, and these dasas are also given a lot of importance in Maharishi Jaimini’s Sutras. These dasas move in a certain pattern. There are three types: Chara (moveable) Shtira (Fixed) and Ubhaya (Dual). The Chara (moveable) dasas are called trikona (trine) dasas. They are used if the ascendant is a dual sign. Shtira (fixed) paryaya dasas are used when the ascendant is a fixed sign. Ubhaya (dual) dasas are used when the ascendant is a moveable sign. Why do the moveable and dual dasas switch in this way ? These dasas are meant for timing death. Death is something which is fixed. If we combine dual signs with eachother in longevity studies, we don’t get death, because dual plus dual equals middle life. Fixed plus fixed is short life. Moveable plus dual gives fixed, or short life . We are constantly moving toward fixation, the stopping of the pranas, which is death. These dasas are also called gochara (movement) dasas. The pranas are moving all the time within us. Where there is movement, there is life. These dasas are very important for people who do Aryuveda, or others who study the pulses and the vital energy of the body such as homeopaths and accupuncturists. It gives information on what is affecting the pranas of the body. The Paryaya dasas are closely linked to the D- 6 chart, which is on a physical level as it is in the first harmonic of the divisional charts. It is like the breath that is going in and and out. It is for diseases with a physical cause. It shows the physical manifestation of the disease. Diseases that are related to subconscious planes, and mental diseases are not to be seen in the D-6 chart, these are seen in the D-30 chart instead. We study the Paryaya dasas of the D- chart, which is available in JHora. Shoola dasa shows us where the God of Death is in the chart. Signs occupied by atma karaka or occupied or aspected by Jupiter cannot kill because of the blessings of Vishnu (AK) or the blessings of Shiva (Jupiter). Gulika dasa (using Vimsottari dasa) is the dasa of the lord of the Nakshatra that Gulika is placed in. As Gulika represents the toxins in the body, this dasa will bring ill health. Mula dasa can be used to time curses, like the curse of Krishna on Samba that caused leprosy. Such terrible diseases have to be suffered from curses, and solution lies in proper remedial measures. Divisional charts to consider for health matters: D-3 Sarpa and Ayudha Drekkanas. Two types of Drekkanas in the D-3 chart are considered to be bad for health: the Sarpa and Ayudha Drekkans. Sarpa means snake. If a planet in a sarpa drekkana it is like being in a noose. They bind you and cause pain by binding you. You get stuck. Ayudha means weapons. Planets in Ayudha drekkenas can indicate surgeries and injuries. D-6 In this chart, the second house the worst. The second lord is maraka (killer) to the lagna. We must study the planets in 2nd house, as well as the second lord, and planets that conjoin the 2nd lord. In this chart, the sixth house should also be considered. The lagna in D-6 shows the good things, what will protect health. The second house shows how the person will die or get afflicted. Study everything good from the first house, everything bad from the second house. Signs that are aspecting the second house can also bring death and disease. Signs that are aspecting the lagna in D-6 can bring health and long life. The same from the Chandra lagna (moon sign) will show fatal diseases. D-9 The navamsha chart is crucial as it shows the overall fortune of the person. If planets are afflicted in this chart, they cannot give good results even if they are well placed in the rashi chart. Malefics in the 4th house in this chart can cause troubles with health. The second house of the navamsha show the major failings of the person; the sun placed here can indicate a failure of health. D-30(S) Shastiamsa - like Trimsamsa. This D-30 S is mentioned in Jataka Parijata. It is a trimsamsha chart which is made like a Shastiamsa (D-60) chart. We must see the planets in the 8th and 12th houses in this chart. Planets in these houses will be malefic for health. Diseases shown in this chart are very deep rooted, as D-30 is on the subconscious level, the 3rd harmonic. If the 8th lord is in lagna in this chart, the disease will be bad but cureable. If lagna lord goes to the 8th house, it is worse and the condition may be incurable. Lagna lord in the 8th house may indicate mental disorders as the lagna signifies intelligence. D-60 shows past life karma that leads to disease. We read the past life from the AL of D-60. See the placement of AK and which yogas it is involved with. Remedial Measures Mantras: Haum Joom Sah is the Maha Mritunjaya bij mantra . Joom is jiva, which means life giving. Haum is supreme knowledge of Shiva. You (jivatma) pray to Shiva for giving us life. Ketu in quadrants gives you the ability of Ganesha. Ganesha is associated with yellow tumeric. Whenever you have a health problem, just tie a yellow tumeric on your arm -- left arm for ladies, right arm for gents. Case One: Ulcerative Colitis and Severe Environmental Sensitivity Ulcerative colitis occurs when the immune system attacks the colon, causing sores (ulcers) and inflammation. Symptoms include rectal bleeding and loss of body fluids through diarrhea. Immuno supressive drugs such as Prednisone may be given, or the colon may be removed in severe cases. Description and History This woman suffered from ulcerative colitis, and had her colon removed in 1999. She also has an extremely severe case of environmental sensitivity. She cannot go into a shop without an oxygen mask, and gets rectal bleeds after accidental exposures to chemicals, even though the colon is gone. She lives the life of an invalid and a hermit, on a very limited diet of just a few bland foods. She cannot go into a store or someone’s house because someone's shampoo or fumes from the detergent used to wash their clothing will bother her and she'll have to leave. She has a sweet and saintly disposition. She has almost died twice from the colitis. Her father beat the children and was an alcoholic. He drove a beer truck. Her mother ignored the violence and did not protect, but wasn't a perpetrator of the abuse. She has been married to her husband since 1968, and he is a nice guy-- loyal, and a good provider. She went right from parent's home to marriage at age 19. In 1981-82 she quit drinking and smoking and felt pulled onto a spiritual path. In 1986-87 environmental sensitivities escalated. By 1987, she was no longer able to work moved away from the ocean to a high elevation to be away from chemicals. By 1988, chemicals became life- threatening to her. In May 1993 rectal bleeding began, which she now has in spite of the surgery. It becomes worse with any chemical exposure. Jan 1994 she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, and was in the hospital for 1 month, had visiting nurses for another month. She was on Prednisone and other medications until 8/94, and had a bad reaction to the medications. These include hair loss, joint pain, blurred vision, scattered thoughts, and depression. She almost died from the ulcerative colitis at this time. In 1999 she had surgery to remove the entire colon after another bad flare in the months before. She almost died again of bleeding in the month before surgery. I was caring for her at the time, and it was like watching someone fall off a cliff. Nothing worked. There were horrible burning pains in rectum for months after surgery. Instead of curing the problem, the surgery caused her diet and lifestyle to become even more limited. But she is alive. Rasi Chart Analyses There is a Hamsa mahaparusha yoga in this chart, bringing strong traits of Jupiter such as spirituality and benevolence. Sun is debilitiated in 8th house, vargottama in navamsha. There is a massive Vipreet raja yoga between 6th 8th and 12th lords. The big change in life happened at around age 34, when she quit smoking/drinking and was pulled to a spiritual path. Ketu is very powerful in the 8th for raising the kudalini but also causes her to suffer physically. At 34 this got a direction due to the conjunction of Mercury with Ketu. If Ketu is in 8th house, no planet should conjoin it. Krishnamurthi had that in his chart and had terrible kundalini experiences, which were bad for his health. Ketu in the 8th gives strange spiritual experiences. At the age of Mercury it will strike, as Mercury is conjoined. Mercury helps us to face the problem, and see it from a different perspective. There is an AK replacement of Venus by the Moon. The natural age of Venus is 25-26 and the Moon is 23-24, so the replacement should have been at age 23-24. Her bad health problems started after the replacement. Her Venus maha daçä (Vimsottari) started around then as well. Ojas is the vital energy of the body and is related to the water element. It is the by product of digestion and shukra datu and is ruled by Venus. Lack of ojas can result in auto-immune diseases such as the ulcerative colitis here. The afflicted, replaced AK Venus is not able to produce enough Ojas. This AK replacement is involving the houses of disease and health (6th & lagna) so the replacement is sure to trigger ill health and that too related to ojas. Ojas is made in the 8th house which is Libra in this case. It has a trememdous power to transform and create. It creates new human beings and also transforms the individual. It can bring about a spiritual revolution within the person if allowed to be burnt by the Sun (ojas goes to spiritual transformation). The parivartana (exchange) with the Sun and Venus should be considered in this light. The results of the Sun are being given by Mercury hence the spiritual awakening happens at age 34. There is sankranti dosha in this chart, as the sun is at less than one degree of longitude in the sign. This weakens the sun. This dosha was working between 1971-83. In fact the Sun & Venus exchange worked exactly in 1982-83. When the sun is in Sankranti, the lord of the day becomes very malefic. It’s Saturn for her, so Saturn has become extremely malefic and is going to give terrible results. Saturn owns the 11th and 12th house in her chart. Saturn plays a crucial role in this disease as it relates to the 8th house whose lord is Venus. Saturn is karaka for both the 8th and 6th house, and occupies the 6th with AK/8th lord Venus. Protection is coming from the strong Moon in lagna and the strong Gaja-kesari yoga. This is a true Gajakesari and promises an excellent spouse and support in female charts. In fact being in 2nd from UL it guarantees protection to spouse and marriage till her end, a real blessing. Moon and Jupiter are controlling the quadrants of the chart. AK Venus is replaced by the moon, and is in the 6th house with Saturn. The Vipareet raj yoga is working on the AK which is bad. This yoga means someone loses something for you to gain something. In this case Venus is AK and 8th lord in 6th. She’s losing her health to be debt free, financially stable, and in a strong marriage. It’s not a good yoga for her. From the arudha lagna in Gemini, the 3rd house has Saturn and Venus, indicating that she may die from this disease. The 12th house has to do with sleeping and recovering every day. Every day we “die” when we sleep, it’s a very important house for cure. Our immune system is working through the 12th house. The 8th house and 12th house are the crucial houses for the immune system. In people with immune problems you’ll find some problems with 12th house, 12th lord, as well as serious afflictions to 8th house, 8th lord. The 6th lord in such debility and the LL in such strength creates a Jaya (victory) yoga. Such a person can be victorious in anything she takes up. Had Venus not been the AK, her life would have been very different. We have to push Jupiter to work for her. Saturn’s transit of Gemini until May 2005 was bad, as Gemini is AL, and 4th from Lagna and moon. Saturn transit on the 4th brings about diseases, because the 4th is the house of cure. When Saturn is in Leo, won’t be so bad. It will be very terrible when transiting Gemini and Libra. When in Libra it will be in trines to AL and A8, Mritupada. A8 is a very bad house for Saturn to be transiting. If the body is not geared for the transformation it can cause death. Mars is in a sarpa (serpant) drekkana, and Jupiter is in an ayudha (weapon) drekkana. A Sarpa drekkana is like a noose, it binds you, and causes pain by binding you. You get stuck. Ayudha means are weapon, and planets in these drekkanas can cause injuries. She needs to wear gold or topaz and make Jupiter favorable. You can check the drekkanas easily using the pull down menu in the basics section of JHora. Right click in the basics menu and select “planetary drekkanas”. Divisional Charts Navmsha: The 2nd house of the Navamsha chart will show the major failings of the person. She has the sun in the second house. The sun fails, so the health fails. Her AK Venus is debilitated in the 1st house in this chart, afflicted with 3rd and 8th lord Mars. The Sun is debilitated in the sign of the debilitated AK. Sun is also Ishta devata. A debilitated Ishta devata is a curse of sorts. The first thing to see in a horoscope is what the mood of God is. If the mood of God is bad, especially if linked to the 6th or 8th house, it’s bound to indicate problems. She needs to propitiate the sun. Once the problem of the sun goes away, most of her problems will go away. Her Ishta devata will smile at her. She needs Rama’s blessings. Shashthamsa (D-6) chart The 2nd house is the worst house in the Shashthamsa chart. We study the planets in 2nd house, the second lord, and planets that conjoin the 2nd lord in this chart. This is because the second lord is maraka (death inflicting) to the lagna. In this case, the 2nd lord is Jupiter and has again gone to the 6th with the exalted Sun in Aries. Again disease is coming out of Pitta (fire) — ulcerative colitis. The way out is to cool things down with a beneficial Jupiter. Scorpio lagna with Mars doesn’t help. Once again the dispositor of the Sun-Jupiter combination is coming to the lagna. The bile must become more favorable. Excessive bile is the root cause of the physical suffering. There are two parts to the suffering – the immune system and excessive bile. Mars is lord of 6th coming up to lagna, which is the bile rising, as dispositor of 2nd lord. The 2nd and 6th are focus in D-6, and the 8th and 12th are focus of D-30. In both D-6 and D-30 Mars brings the energy of a bad house to the first house. Parasari Trimsmsha: (D-30) After having identified which planets are the cause of disease, see if these planets are located in the trimsamsha of Mercury. The problem planet here is Venus, which is in the trimsamsha of Mercury, so the problem is tridoshic. It makes the condition difficult to cure. There’s no solution for Venus other than the bija from the mritunjaya “Joom”. Joom means soul. She must activate the aspect of Jupiter on Venus. Jupiter must rise and shine and fight it out. 8th lord Mars in lagna in Mercury’s sign is bad. Lagna lord Mercury has gone to the 6th house with Saturn. Mars is again in lagna as in D-6. When seeing the trimsamsha, keep in mind the tridoshic nature of Mercury, and the other doshas. See if the diseases can be identified. Jupiter and the Sun are in the signs of Mars in trimsamsha, indicating surgery. Sun pratyantara daçä was very difficult for her. In Moon pratyantar dasa, she went in for the cure. The agni (fire) is so bad because Mars has gone to the lagna. The negativity of the 8th house goes to the lagna. There were terrible ulcers from all that Pitta. The lord of Aries has gone to Virgo. Sun exalted in 8th is doing more harm than good. When the sun debilitated in Libra in the 8th, as it is in the rasi chart, it is better. Someone that’s causing harm shouldn’t be so strong. Jaimini is very clear that in D-30 the 8th house is the worst. From here you see the neecha dosa, or your past sins that you have to suffer physically. You should have no planets in this house, or if you have any planets, disease if bound to come because of that planet. The Sun is giving disease and also holding the cure. She has to appease Rama to come out of the problem. Shashtiamsa like Trimsamsha We abbreviate this chart as D-30(S). Rahu is in the 8th house and the 8th lord is in 9th,, conjoined lagna lord Mercury. The 8th lord and lagna lord must have a connection in this chart for chronic disease to occur. This lagna lord is completely smashed. It was terrible in Moon-Mercury daçä. With D-30(S) we can pinpoint the daçäs. Moon is in lagna, carrying the energies of Mercury (its lord) during its daçä. Mercury and Venus are afflicted, and show the disease. Rahu is in 8th, making it difficult to detect disease. Shashtiamsa (D-60) shows us past life karma that leads to disease. The sun is the atma, the soul himself. The Sun or Jupiter must have a strong say on the ascendant to have a strong spiritual link. The sun will make someone very strong in their birth religion, whereas Jupiter will give the knowledge that God is above all religion. In this D-60, Jupiter aspects lagna from Aquarius, and Jupiter’s dispositor Rahu is in lagna. This means she believes more in world religion, and going beyond birth religion. The shashtsiamsa shows the intelligence you carry from your past life experiences. Look at placement of AK. Venus is AK, and is 7th lord in 6th house in debility. Sun and Venus are going to indicate serious problems in her chart, as they are both debilitated here. Saturn and moon in the 12th is good. Moon in 12th indicates a very clean heart. LL Mars is in 9th house. AL is in Leo. We treat the AL as the first house, and read past life from there. Venus is the problem in this chart, it is the lord of 3rd and 10th house. It’s in debility, she’s done some bad karma (10th lord). It indicates terrible suffering. The 3rd lord could indicate younger sibling. Jupiter is in 7th from Al. She had a very good spouse, she was totally faithful. The 7th lord in the 8th, this means her spouse was sick. In the rasi chart, 7th lord is also in 8th, but since the AK is involved, she became sick instead of having a sick spouse. If AK is involved, all the energies are coming to your soul. Perhaps in her last life she prayed, “God don’t let him suffer so much, let me share his suffering.” Rahu is in 9th from AL Leo, she was a person who didn’t have too much faith in her own religion and looked to world religions, also someone who has tremendous misfortune from father or elders. So these traits were in the last life as well. The 9th lord in the 5th house (Mars) indicates one son. In this life she also has one son. The same son has been born again. The9th lord in 5th or 5th lord in 9th is Ekaputra yoga . Rahu aspects Mars, so problems come with this son. If Rahu is in the 9th, wear a yellow sapphire/topaz on the right hand ring finger, then all the problems of the 9th house will go. Is the husband is same person too? The 7th lord from Venus is Saturn in the rasi chart. In D-60, Saturn is the 7th lord from AL. So it’s the same husband. See the significators and their lords to judge this. What is God trying to teach from this? What you ask for you is what you are getting. It is good to pray that someone gets well, but it is not good to pray that you share their sickness. Dasas Caturaséöi sama daçä In this chart the nakñatra daçä called caturaséöi sama daçä applies because the 10th lord is in 10th house. In Saturn daçä (1959 through 1971), the disease came to her. She was in Sun daçä from 1971-1983, and sun is debilitated. Saturn daçä was from 1959-71. May 1993, the time her rectal bleeding began was Moon daçä Saturn antardaçä. Jan 1994, the time of her first bad period, was Sun antardaçä. Saturn and Sun form bad adhi yogas from the Moon. During Mars daçä Jupiter antardaçä she would be healthy or getting considerable medical help. In Mars daçä Jupiter antardaçä she had the surgery. Jupiter was there to help her, because she is a spiritual person. Jupiter is in an Ayudha (weapon) drekkena. A planet in äyuddha drekkäëa can give surgery, because you need a weapon to cut someone. The situation aggravated in Saturn & Sun pratyantardasa and colon operation was in Moon pratyantardasa. This is actually a God-send for her and she will get considerable relief due to this. Presently she’s in a Mars Sun period. After August of 2005 will be better (moon) but she’ll want to go in for a cure immediately. The solution isn’t in operations. The idea is to make Jupiter so strong that weapons cannot touch the body. After 2007 she’ll come into Mercury daçä, hopefully that will be better. Saturn antardaçä may be challenging. Mercury is helping solve a lot of problems. Her spouse is always supportive of her, as mercury is the 7th lord and is in the 8th house. Mercury is retrograde, it’s helping her fight. A benefic planet which is retrograde is a blessing in disease. This Mercury is pitrikäraka. So it represents the father. This father is a horrible person, because it takes the negative energy from Sun and Ketu. The good part of Mercury is that it is fighting for health. From the suffering caused by her father, she learned she’s got to stand up and fight. She ran away from home to get away from her parents and get married. Shoola daçäs. The problem started Taurus daçä whose lord is Venus. The worst suffering was in Leo daçä, with Saturn and Venus aspected by Rahu. It was a very dangerous time. Because Venus is AK she survived. The rule is that signs occupied by AK or occupied or aspected by Jupiter cannot kill because of the blessings of Vishnu (AK) or the blessings of Shiva (Jupiter) For the last 2.5 years, Saturn has been in AL. Now she’s in Virgo shoola daçä, Virgo is aspected by Moon and Jupiter. Jupiter is saying that the way out is through the Mritunjaya mantra. Until 2011 is Virgo daçä. Libra daçä will be difficult, as the Sun is debilitated there with Sankrati dosa. Ketu, Saturn and Venus are aspecting it from the 3rd from AL, the place which shows where we die. The Chaturaseeti sama daçä confirms this as a challenging time with it will be Mercury daçä Saturn antardaçä. Remedial measures prescribed: Drink warm water. With warm water, the cleansing abilities of the body are improved. Milk in the morning would be good to strengthen the moon and general health, helps make ojas. Shri Ram mantra: Shri Ram Jaya Ram Jaya Jaya Ram . To strengthen the sun which is her Ishta devata and gives victory (Jaya) and recovery from disease. The sun is giving the disease, and also holds the cure. Rama is the deity represented by the sun. Wear more yellow clothes, not black, depressing colors to strengthen Jupiter. Mritunjaya mantra because Venus causing the problem, and this mantra related to Venus. It is also an important mantra when health issues are severe and even life threatnening. For the complete text of this mantra, along with translation and a sound file, go to this web site: http://www.srath.com/mantra/mrityunjaya.htm A Topaz should be worn on the right hand ring finger to strengthen Jupiter. Follow up: She finds the mantras to be quite transformative for her, they help her to surrender to God and fate, and find joy and peace within herself, despite her health limitations. She had a topaz ring made and started wearing it on Thursday March 10, 2005. She felt some energy from it and is happy with it. On Sanjay’s advice, she decided to try drinking milk. She cannot handle cow’s milk, but I was able to provide pure raw goat’s milk from my own animals. She has been so surprised that she can tolerate it well, and is now drinking 3-4 cups per day. The milk is helping her to be stronger and feel better. She loves it and is looking into getting a goat for herself for a ready source of fresh milk. Case Two: Polymyositis Polymyositis means “many muscles inflamed.” It is an auto immune disorder characterized by the immune system attacking and damaging the muscles of the body. This causes swelling, weakness, and pain in the muscles. The affected muscles may atrophy and harden and cause difficulty breathing or swallowing. Description and History This 44 year old woman was weakened by working the night shift as a hospital nurse for two years in 89-90. She traces her problems back to a series of vaccinations she got when working as a hospital nurse in 1992 or 1993. At that point she developed chronic fatigue syndrome and some abnormal lab values. She married in 1994 but feels unhappy and unsupported in her marriage, and is chronically angry with her husband. Her daughter was born on may 25, 1995, and she hasn't been healthy since then. She has been disabled by her disease since 2003. She has already tried chemotherapy drugs to suppress her immune system, and her physician wants her to take even stronger ones, but she resists because of the awful side-effects. Her current round of prednisone started in September 2004, but the disease always intensifies when she goes off the prednisone-- there have been no true remissions. She notices that she gets depressed before the physical flare-ups start and feels there is a connection between depression and the physical disease. Rasi Chart Analyses Saturn is the karaka for muscles, which is what polymyositis afflicts. In this case, Saturn is also both AK and badhakesh. With Saturn as AK she does suffer from depression. The depression comes before the physical symptoms. It is interesting how Saturn rules both these afflictions of depression and muscle problems. The main problem here is that Atma Karaka is far too strong. It is strong in the 9th, it damages the 9th house. Saturn is afflicting the sun which is bad for health. He’s afflicting the 9th house as well as Jupiter, the significator and lord of the 9th house. The protection of the body is the 9th house. 9th is the house of dharma, and dharma always protects. The job of Vishnu is to protect you. The 9th house gives the power to fight back. Immune related problems come from the 8th house, which is 12th from the 9th , it’s undoing the protection of the 9th. Saturn is significator of the 8th house and is aspecting the 8th lord. Mars has a dual role in this chart, it’s lord of 8th house and lord of lagna. We need to determine whether Mars is giving results of the lagna lord, which would protect, or the 8th lord, which brings disease. Mars is placed in the 3rd house here which is the 8th from 8th, also a house of disease. Saturn is the significator of the 8th house and is aspecting Mars. So Mars under Saturn’s influence begins giving the results of the 8th house. However, Jupiter is aspecting both Mars and lagna. This causes Mars to behave like the lagna lord and do good. So Mars is playing a very peculiar role by giving both kinds of results in this chart. In addition to this, Mars is afflicting Saturn which is AK. This affliction causes depression and muscle weakness, as both are ruled by Saturn. Venus is maraka for her ascendant as it rules the 2nd and 7th houses, and is lord of the 64th navamsha and 22nd Sonamath Drekkena. Here gulika is in the ascendant, showing torment. Gulika is the son of Saturn, he’s carrying the poison of Saturn in the body. The poison is spreading in the body and damaging the muscles. This would have been extremely bad during Saturn transit of Gemini. Every day we take one more step toward death. When we sleep, the 12th house from lagna is activated. The houses of healing are Pisces and Cancer, and the 4th and 12th house. They indicate how the body is handling daily curing. The moon heals us every night during sleep. That is why we sleep at night, and why the moon is strong at night. The moon is in the 12th house of sleep, so sleep is very important for her. When she stays up past midnight, like she did with her night job, her health problems will aggravate. This moon in the 12th house of hospitals has also made her become a nurse. From the moon, the 4th house is also very crucial for healing. She has a malefic there, lagna lord Mars. The first thing we need to do is to make the lagna lord favorable. Mars is aspected by Saturn, so she’ll have a problem in this area whenever a dasa of either of these planets come. If lagna lord Mars becomes favorable, half the problems are over. The 12th house from the moon is also crucial for sleeping, along with the 4th house. The 12th house is the bed where you are going to sleep. Malefics in the 12th from the moon show a disturbed situation in bed. Relationships can get spoiled from discomfort in bed. Ketu is in the 12th house from the moon. In 4th house from the Moon, Mars is aspected by Saturn. She must cut down on foods at night, especially around sleeping. Sleeping is closely related to what we have for dinner. She shouldn’t have hot things, coffee (Saturn) or Tea (Mars) or any such things which would keep her awake at night. On the other hand, if she strengthens the moon by taking a lot of milk, she’ll get good sleep. We must get the natural system to work. The curse of Jupiter is in this chart, with Jupiter afflicted by Rahu, Mars and Saturn. Unless she does some work of the guru, she can’t come out of the curse of the guru. Jupiter is conjoined AK and aspected by the 8th lord. This afflicted Jupiter is also the lord of the moon sign. This means that Brihaspati is very important for good health. Depression comes because moon sign lord Jupiter is closely conjoined Saturn. We treat the AK (atma karaka) sign as the lagna to see how the soul is viewing things. The soul is sitting in the 9th house. It is looking at Mars as badhak (obstructor), because Mars is sitting in the badhak house from AK. The soul is rejecting lagna lord Mars. That is how the entire problem has occurred. The lagna lord is badhak to the soul. The lagna lord represents the body’s intelligence. In this chart it is working in the wrong way, it’s working against her atma. It is working to obstruct AK and the 9th lord Jupiter, the protector. Her own intelligence is working against her. People who are trying to advise her and help her are seen from the 9th house. Mars is badhak to that. Mars is sitting in Gemini, Mercury’s house, so it won’t consider green foods with iron bad. This is because the color green is associated with Gemini. These foods are indicated for her, as they will ensure that the Saturnian supplement iron is coming. When lagna lord becomes badhak to AK, health isn’t always involved. In this case the health suffers only because 8th lord is also involved, with Saturn as AK and 8th lord Mars. A Saturn Mars yoga is bad, and in this case it involves health due to the 8th house and AK combination. On the other hand, the aspect of Jupiter on Mars is the saving grace. Jupiter is the pacifying factor between lagna lord Mars and AK Saturn. We need to strengthen Jupiter in various ways to ensure harmony between these two. Divisional Charts In the Navamsha chart, the sun is in marana karaka shtana in the 12th house. That would explain why she had such bad health during Venus Sun dasa. Venus is in 8th and Sun is in 12th. Mars is in the 7th, causing her marriage to full of conflict. Venus in the 8th is not good. In the Shashthamsa (D-6) Venus and Mars are in lagna, Mars is 6th lord and Venus is 12th lord. The second house, which shows the health problems, contains 8th lord Saturn. The sun, representing the ability to heal, is in the 8th house. In the Parasari trimsamsa, D-30 chart, Sagittarius is rising with Mars and Venus in lagna. Rahu, Ketu, and Saturn are in the 7th house, the badhak house from the ascendant. Saturn is afflicted by Rahu and Ketu. Whenever you find Rahu, Ketu, or Saturn, observe the sign very carefully. Saturn rules the muscles, so the muscles are afflicted. It’s in a tridoshic sign, which makes it very difficult to cure. Venus is the 6th lord in lagna, and there is an exchange between Jupiter and Mars. In the Shastyamsa like trimsamsa D-30(S), 8th lord Mercury is in 6th. Lagna lord Saturn has gone to Mercury’s house, so the lagna lord is in the house of 8th lord. It’s happening in 5th house, house of chitta. Lagna lord in the 5th house shows the mind is tormented. Mercury, the 8th lord is in the in the 6th showing that the nerves are weak. Saturn, Mars and Mercury are involved. Mars attacks Saturn, just as the immune system attacks the nerves. She got sick and stopped working during Ketu Rahu Vimsottari daçä, and Rahu is the lagna lord in this chart. Venus is fully aspected by Saturn, Mars and Rahu. This shows that her husband is cold towards her. Saturn and Mars in are in the tridosic sign of Gemini, making the problem difficult to cure. In the Shashtyamsa (D-60) lagna lord is in the 7th house. We check the arudha lagna, which is in Virgo. 3rd house from AL in this chart shows how the person died in the last birth. Moon Rahu and Saturn indicate the disease by which she passed. Ketu Sun Mars and Me also also aspect 3rd from AL. Since Saturn is aspecting, surely the person dies of disease, a Capricorn disease as the sign is aspected by Saturn and Rahu from Capricorn. She believes she will die by disease, and it comes from the last birth. This belief must be broken for her to heal. Venus was yoga karaka in the last birth, as it is 9th lord in the 7th house from AL in this chart. Again it is placed in the 7th house (from AL), exalted in Pisces. In the rasi chart Venus has the same placement, both are malavya yogas. This shows strong attachments to relationships. The same people from the last life are helping her now. She’s always received a lot of support, care, and love. Rahu is in the 5th house in the rasi chart. Rahu in the 5th shows that at least once or twice in her life, her love affairs would have been bad. In D-60, Rahu is also in the 5th from AL. It’s the same person from the last lifetime. She’s feeling cheated by her husband. She knows something is wrong but she can’t do a thing about it. Daçäs: Shula daçä of Aquarius started in 10/96. As soon as Aquarius started, the disease started. Aquarius is badhak for her lagna and contains Ketu. It’s over in October 2005. She’ll be able to get out of it then if she does things properly. She needs to focus on getting those toxins out of her system. When she takes those medicines, there are a lot of toxins building up in the body. If she simultaneously flushes them out, there’s no problem. The body needs immunosuppressive drugs like prednsisone because of Saturn’s weaknesses. It’s a kind of supplement. Simultaneously we increase the iron intake in the body to strengthen Saturn. Then she won’t need the medicine. After October 2005 the moon will come with Pisces Shula daçä. The moon is aspected by Mars, a rudra yoga. It is also aspected by Jupiter and AK. The aspect from Jupiter is beautiful gajakesari yoga. Pisces daçä should not be bad, unless Mars has become so negative, and the toxins have increased so much, that Mars has become stronger than Jupiter and Saturn. After Oct 2005 things should be fine for her (see Shula daçä). Moon period starts on March 20 2005 in Vimsottari daçä, so she’s heading for relief. She’ll want to travel also. With moon in the 12th, the world is her home. In Vimsottari daçä, Venus is delivering the Gulika daçä. This is because Venus rules the Nakshatra that Gulika is placed in, so Venus daçä becomes Gulika daçä. Gulika is nothing but toxins in the body. Here Gulika is in the 1st house, the head. Gulika’s nakshatra lord is carrying the toxins in the body and is supposed to clear them out. During the Gulika daçä of Venus, the toxins are not getting cleared. One of the simplest ways to clear toxins from the body is to drink warm water. 6th lord Mercury is aspecting Venus also. If we work on toxin removal, the problem will be solved. That’s what the daçä is all about. Venus Sun, and Venus Moon periods should be good times for her in general, but for health you need to see the planets from the daçä lord. We read the antar daçä from the daçä lord for health matters. The daçä lord is like the sun, the natural significator of health, and the antar daçä lord is like the moon, as the moon brings cure. Moon is in 6th from Venus, and Sun is badhakesh in the 12th. They are not well placed from Venus, and they are the terrible enemies of Venus. So Venus-Sun and Venus-Moon periods are not good for health. From Venus, Mars and Rahu are well placed in the 9th and 11th, Jupiter is so-so in the 3rd, and Saturn is good in the 3rd. Venus is strong in its own sign, so a lot of support will come. On the other hand, it is a maraka with the 6th lord Mercury. It’s a malavya mahaparusha yoga as it is in it’s own sign and in a quadrant. From a wealth point of view it is fine, from a health point of view it is bad. She stopped working in January 1997, during Rahu-Ketu Vimsottari daçä making the problem strongly linked to past karma. Ketu is located in the badhak sign of Aquarius, so it is also badhakesh. Rahu afflicts Saturn with rashi dristi and is co-lord of Aquarius. Remedial measures It would be good to strengthen Jupiter and Mars simultaneously. Topaz is a hot stone, yellow sapphire is a cold stone. Jupiter is more favorable with Mars, so a yellow topaz should be worn. Her system is losing energy and that is how the muscles are gradually getting ruined. After 2000, it is the poison that is destroying her, not the disease. Since Venus came in 2000 the body is not able to remove all the poison. Pancha karma would be a superb treatment for her. Warm water is indicated as well. Saturn is nothing but cold. The muscles become weaker. Age destroys the muscle. Hot water brings heat to the body. Mars represents the immune system, and is the 8th lord, and is badhak to AK Saturn. Tea (Mars) is not good for her. Foods related to Mars have to go. Fruits are good to strengthen Jupiter. Spinach and greens are good because Mercury is in trines to Mars and is its dispositor. Greens with iron are good, to strengthen Saturn. Supplementing the diet with iron for Saturn is indicated because Saturn is AK. The body needs more food pertaining to the AK planet. The 2nd lord from UL is the moon in the Rasi chart. It has gone to the 12th house. She should keep water near her head because of this moon in the 12th house. If Ketu is in 12th, keep a dancing Ganesha at the head of the bed. The 12th house is the house of curing. If you can’t cure the 12th house, how can you cure anything? Since Venus is 7th lord in 7th house, the Maha Mritunjaya mantra is indicated. Parasara is crystal clear on that. If health problems occur during the period of any planet placed in the 7th house, or lording the 7th house, the Maha Mritunjaya mantra is the only remedy. Further case notes: On the day she was to come in for her appointment to learn about the remedial measures, a big tree fell across the road to her house and she was unable to come. I’ve observed that obstacles such as this sometimes occur when people begin to make some kind of important change such as starting a mantra. Perhaps the Brahmin’s curse in her chart is making it difficult for her to get started on changing her karma. Follow up appointment after two months: She is currently trying only a few of the remedial practices that have been suggested for her. After 2 months she did not get a topaz, and has not learned the long Maha Mritunjaya mantra but is doing the bij mantra Haum Joom Sah on walks. She doesn’t like drinking milk, but is eating more green vegetables. She is angry at her husband a lot and is not feeling very well in general. In homeopathic terminology, we call this bad relationship with the husband an Obstacle to Cure. It makes healing difficult when there is an aggravating situation such as this. In Sanskrit, Saturn is known as Shani which means golden. Calling the deliverer of death an auspicious name is like chanting a mantra and helps to alleviate some of the maleficence . Other names for Shani include Sanaischara (one who moves slowly) Vakra (crooked), Asita (the black one), and Panu (lame). Shani is considered to be the son of Surya (the sun god). Surya’s wife Samjna could not stand the brilliant light radiating from her husband, so she created a shadow image of herself to live with Surya. Shanaischara, (Shani) was the second son from this union. According to the Bramha-vavarta-purana, Shani took on severe austerities (tapas) and would not even look at the woman he married when she tried to entice him into sensual pleasures. She became so angry at him for rejecting her that she placed the curse on him: From then on that whatever Shani looked at would be destroyed. Other descriptions mention that he has a terrible vengeful form, his chariot is yoked to eight vultures of a dark blue color. His icon is to be made of black iron installed on a pedestal in the shape of an arrow, and faces West, the direction of the setting sun. The western direction is where Shani gets directional strength in the Vedic chart, and the sign Tula (Libra) which is in the Western direction in the natural zodiac, exalts Shani. When the sun sets, Shani is strong. We see why Shani is the enemy and the antitheseis of Surya, the radiant one who rises in the East and provides everything we need for life. Shani is the shadow to Surya’s light. Shani is exalted in Tula, the sign of Surya’s debilitation. Shani likes to judge souls in the sign of Tula and prevent them from from attaining moksha or liberation from this world. He represents the wrongdoings that weigh heavily upon us and for which we must suffer. As the ruler of Tapas loka, the plane of austerities, he denies us pleasure and helps us to practice renunciation. As Surya’s job is to sustain us, Shani’s job is to destroy us. We can determine when and how he will make us suffer by looking at the Vedic Chart. Shani is the significator for Vayu Tattvah, which represents the pranas in the body. The nature of Vayu or wind is to disperse which causes our death. Keeping the pranas in the body with techniques like pranayama can help us to be ready for death when our pranas are finally taken away for good. Shani is also the primary significator for three houses in the chart, which are the three dustanas or houses of suffering. These are the 6th (strife, infectious illness, shad ripu or six sins) the 8th (death, chronic disease, suffering, the dark night of the soul, renunciation) and 12th (loss, letting go, death). To understand the roots of our own suffering, we look at the 6th, 8th, and 12th houses from Shani in the rashi and varga charts. Moon, the Great Healer Shani’s relationship to the primary luminary, Surya, has already been explained. His relationship to the secondary luminary, the maternal and healing moon, is equally inimical and strong. If Surya is the great illuminator, why is only Chandra considered to be the significator of healing? While Surya’s rays are hot and burning, Chandra’s rays are gentle and soothing. Mother Chandra takes the energy of Surya and transforms it into nectar or milk that is nourishing, healing, and palatable. Why does the moon wax and wane? The twenty seven daughters of Prajapati, who are the 27 Nakshatras, were all married to Chandra. Rohini was the favorite wife, and Chandra spent most of his time with her. For this, Prajapati punished him by making him wither away, then later modified the curse to make him wax and wane. Another classic states that the waning occurs as the gods drink the digits of the moon, which contain Amrita. This occurs from full moon until new moon. Starting on the day of new moon when sun and moon are conjoined, Surya replenishes the digits for another 15 days until the moon is full again. According to the Vishnu Purana, Chandra emerged from the Milk ocean when it was churned by the devas and asuras to get the Amrita, or nectar of immortality. Purascharyanava states that Chandra belongs to the lineage of Rishi Atri, as does our own lineage. All his garments and ornaments are white, and he is associated with Jala (deified water) and Uma (the great Mother). Chandra is also described in the classics as a Brahmin who is full of nectar. He delights the world with his cool rays, and the gods relish him for his nectar. He is called an ocean of Ambrosia, with face like a full moon. His very body removes the darkness of the worlds. He holds a blue lotus in one hand and bestows boons with the other. There are strong and interesting relationships between Chandra the healer and Shani the disease giver. Shani takes 28 years to circle the zodiac while Chandra takes 28 days. Shani is the ruler of the Purnima tithi, which is the tithi of full moon. The moon’s giving is greatest at that time due to the austere influence of Shani on the already nurturing moon. Both Shani and Chandra are exalted in signs of Shukra (Venus) and debilitated in signs of Mangala (Mars). The moon does not do well in the dustana houses signified by Shani, especially in the 8th, where she is in her house of Marana karaka stana (death-like suffering.) Chandra’s sign of exaltation and Moolatrikona is the fixed earth sign of Taurus, ruled by Shukra. Like Chandra, Shukra is a watery (jala tattvah) planet. The fixed earth qualities of Taurus provide some stability to the waxing and waning moon, and the water element is also supported as the ruler of Taurus, Shukra, is also a jala tattvah planet. Chandra is the significator of the 4th house, so we look to the 4th house from the moon to understand our abilities to heal. Malefic influences there will interfere with the healing process, while benefics will help. Part Two- The Rashi Chart in Health and Disease Now let’s consider some charts keeping in mind the importance of Shani in disease, and Chandra in healing. First, let’s review a list of the most important factors to consider when looking at the rashi chart for health matters.
Case One: Died of Lupus: Lupus is a chronic disease characterized by the immune system attacking the body. In severe cases such as this one it can lead to death. The water element is crucial for the immune system; people with chronic immune problems will have afflictions to the water element in their charts as signified by Moon and Venus. This person died from kidney complications due to the lupus attacking her kidneys.
Case Two: Her sister: Lupus but still alive. The native is the sister of the above case. This woman was diagnosed with lupus as a teen, has had lupus and other auto immune conditions all her life, and spent her teenage years and early 20s on heavy steroids to keep her immune system in check. Presently she is on homeopathy and doing well.
Case 3: A Healthy Guy: In comparison to the charts of the chronically ill people we have been studying, let’s take a look at the chart of someone is apparently boisterously healthy, successful, and full of energy. Here is the chart of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the illustrious movie star/governor of California. Famous for his magnificently sculpted body, he was chosen as “Mr. Universe” five times. He had elective surgery to replace a heart valve on April 16th, 1997. He had not been sick but had it done to avoid future problems. Vara lord and AK are both Mars.
Part III – Divisional charts for health and disease. This chart is found in Pt Sanjay Rath’s work Divisional Charts and their Applications. Level Harmonic Divisional charts Physical Primary D-1 to D-12 Conscious First harmonic D-13 to D-24 Subconscious Second harmonic D25-to D-36 Super conscious Third harmonic D-37- to D-48 Supra conscious Fourth harmonic D-49 to D-60 To fine tune our understanding of the native’s health, we use divisional charts to show us different aspects which influence health. The lower divisional charts, D-1 through D-12, are the primary cycle of charts which relate to the body and the physical plane. From this group we use the following to look more closely at health problems:
We have already looked at the rashi chart in detail, now we will describe the other primary divisional charts involved in health and disease. D-3 (S)The Somanatha Drekkana chart shows our Ojas (vitality). Ojas is derived from the water element and gives the body the power to recuperate. In the Somanatha drekkana chart, the water element should not be afflicted. This chart, along with the D-6 chart, give information that is important to health practitioners that work with the body’s own energies. This chart gives an indication of the state of vitality. The depletion of Ojas takes place continually from age 18 in a steady progression, but can worsen with challenging transits. Toxic treatments such as radiation, chemotherapy, and immunosupressants may keep deadly diseases such as cancer at bay, but these treatments also weaken the Ojas. Holistic treatments such as Aryuveda, homeopathy, and Traditional Chinese medicine strengthen the Ojas. The element that opposes water is fire. The fire will boil the water away, causing depletion of Ojas. Sun and Mars are the fiery planets that can afflict the lagna or moon by conjunction or aspect in this chart, causing the Ojas to be destroyed. If the fiery planets are afflicting the moon rather than the lagna, the disease is caused more by a mental state such as chronic depression. In this case, the prognosis may be more hopeful as the lagna itself is not afflicted. The air element dries the water up, so the airy planet Saturn is also harmful for Ojas. If Saturn is afflicting the lagna or moon, the Ojas will be harmed. Rahu is also considered very harmful to Ojas. Death is end of Ojas, so the 2nd house, which is the natural maraka or killer house, or sometimes the 8th house in this D-3 chart will be afflicted in chronic disease. Any planet in the second house, or the lord of the second house, can also destroy the Ojas. D-6 This chart shows the movement of pranas, the air element, in the body. As in the Somanath Drekkana chart, the second house the worst. The second lord is maraka (killer) to the lagna. We study the planets in 2nd house, as well as the second lord, and planets that conjoin the 2nd lord to see the afflictions to prana in this chart. The sixth house, the natural house of disease, should also be considered. The lagna in D-6 shows the good things, what will protect health. We study everything good from the first house, everything bad from the second house. Signs that are aspecting the second house can also bring death and disease. Signs that are aspecting the lagna in D-6 can bring health and long life. We also view these placements from Chandra lagna. D-9 The navamsha chart is crucial as it shows the overall fortune of the person. If planets are afflicted in this chart, they cannot give good results even if they are well placed in the rashi chart. Malefics in the 4th house in this chart can cause troubles with health. The second house of the navamsha shows the major failings of the person; the sun placed here can indicate a failure of health. D-30(S) Shastiamsa - like Trimsamsa. In addition to these first harmonic charts, we use a chart from the second harmonic cycle which relates to the subconscious plane and the 6th house, which is the house of punishment and disease. This D-30 S is mentioned in Jataka Parijata. It is a trimsamsha chart which is made like a Shastiamsa (D-60) chart. It relates to the 6th house as we are left with the 6th house when we remove 2 cycles of 12. We must see the planets in the 8th and 12th houses in this chart. Planets in these houses will be malefic for health. Diseases shown in this chart are very deep rooted, as D-30 is on the subconscious level, the 3rd harmonic. If the 8th lord is in lagna in this chart, the disease will be bad but curable. If lagna lord goes to the 8th house, it is worse and the condition may be incurable. Lagna lord in the 8th house may indicate mental disorders as the lagna signifies intelligence. D-60 If the birth time is accurate, we can also do a reading of the chart from the 4th harmonic or supra-conscious plane which tells us about the past life. The status of the atma karaka in this chart is particularly important. The lagna shows the connection between the past life and the current life. We read the chart from the Arudha Lagna, and note the type of death in the 3rd from AL. Case Four: Cancer, Alcoholism, and chronic inflammation. The native had rectal cancer, which was misdiagnosed by several doctors as a hemorrhoid for almost two years until January 2006. Before that she had suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome from 1986, colitis from 1996, bladder cancer in 2000, and interstitial cystitis from 2001. Depression started in childhood and alcoholism started at age 14 and lasted until June 5, 2005. In spite of, or perhaps because of, this painful history, she is a kind and compassionate person who works as a counselor for children who suffer from cancer. To do:
Mental Illness Charts Mental illness also shows up readily in the rashi chart. For mental illness we must note the following:
Important Divisional charts include:
Vimsottari dasa shows how the state of consciousness changes at different times of life according to the gunas of the planet ruling the maha dasa and antar dasa. For example, a person in A Jupiter dasa would be in a more sattvic frame of mind while a person in Saturn dasa would more eaily have darker, more tamasic thoughts. Schizophrenic A This is a sensitive young girl whose world started to fall apart just as she was trying to finish college. Her extreme artistic nature and sensitivity and sense of isolation got the better of her and she felt the ocean waves, the sun, and the blueness of the sky were responding to her emotions. An organization took over her town and was trying to determine if she were Buddah or Jesus. The sky changed color more gracefully when she talked. Then she got really scared and thought the planes flying overhead were coming to take her back to Tibet. They were running her through tests to see how compassionate she was. It was so scary she started to think that maybe it was all delusion. She ended up in the hospital and was put on a conservatorship, which means she is a ward of the government and has no personal rights. To Do: Analyze the factors that determine mind, emotions, and consciousness as listed in the points above. Also, answer the following questions:
Schizophrenic B This young woman also suffers from schizophrenia; her identical twin suffers from anxiety but is not schizophrenic. We can read her sister’s chart from the 11th house. To do: Analyze the 14 factors, D-9 and D-30(S) What is the effect of retrograde Jupiter in the 5th house? Multiple Personality (Dissociative Identity Disorder) In spite of a horrific childhood which fractured her personality, this woman is quite functional—she has held down the same job for many years and has friends and community. To Do: Analyze the rashi chart; see D-9 and D-30(s).
